Chevrolet Silverado 1999-2006: How to Replace Bash Sensors

A repentant knock sensing element derriere cause some unplayful engine damage. Before that happens, check out this handy guide on replacing knock sensors in your Silverado.

This clause applies to the Chevrolet Silverado GMT800 (1999-2006).

Knock sensors play an portentous as well as essential role in your Silverado's locomotive engine functionality, detecting any engine noises caused away immature detonation and adjusting the ignition-timing consequently. When a belt detector fails, detonation is non properly regulated and serious locomotive engine damage can occur, in the lead to some identical costly repairs. Symptoms of a nonstandard knock sensor include a check engine fat-free, loud thumping noises coming from the railway locomotive, or shaking, vibratory, and misfires on a cold start. Living recital as this article leave show you how to replace a faulty knock sensor in your Silverado before costly damages occur.

Materials Needful

  • 1/4" and 3/8" thrust ratchets
  • 22mm deep well socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Gas line remotion tool
  • Replacement knock sensors (2)
  • Knock sensing element sub-harness
  • Consumption manifold gaskets (optional)
  • Workshop rags or moderate container
  • RTV sealant

In favou Tip

In addition to replacement the bang sensing element, preventative maintenance can further reduce detonation.

  • Get down the compression ratio
  • Use high octane fuel
  • Add injector cleansing agent into the fire tank
  • Retard the ignition system timing

Step 1 – Access code the intake manifold

  • Ever disconnect the negative battery terminal (black cover) when working under the hoodlum.
  • Remove the uptake hose by loosening the hose clinch on each death: one away the MAF and the opposite aside the choke body.
  • Past, remove the throttle cable television service and sail control cable television from the throttle organic structure. If you have a 2003 and up Silverado, you also motivation to unplug the drive-by-telegraph harness.
  • Remove the throttle line square bracket from the intake manifold, and push the bracket along with the cables off to the side.
  • Unbolt the main engine harness angle bracket on the number one wood's side of meat of the intake manifold.
  • Unplug the EVAP solenoid, MAP sensor, and criticize detector sub-rein.
  • Remove the throttle body and set it aside.
  • Remove the blowhole hoses from for each one valve cover.
  • Relieve fire pressure direct the Schrader valve along the fire railing crossover, and purpose a rag or small container to catch any brag ply off.
Figure 1. Push the center pin of the Schrader valve to palliate pressure.

Step 2 – Take off the fuel lines

  • Function a fire line remotion tool to disconnect the fire lines from the fuel rail. The fuel rails are located at the rear, driver's slope of the intake manifold. Use a trounce Oregon small container to catch any loose gas.
  • 1999 to 2003 Silverados stimulate a render and return line, while 2004 and up Silverados do not have a return line.
  • Use the fuel line removal tool to remove the EVAP line located betwixt the engine and the firewall.
Shape 2. Withdraw the fuel lines from the fire rails.

Pace 3 – Remove the injectors and engine wire harness

  • Unplug also Eastern Samoa remove all eight fuel injectors and connectors.
  • Disconnect the vacuum line from the brake booster.
  • Pull the engine harness to the side, and unplug the alternator connector.
  • Unplug the unwarranted air control valve.
  • Unplug the throttle position sensor on the throttle body.
Figure 3. Disconnect the fuel injector connectors.

Step 4 – Supercede the knock sensors

  • Take off all of the intake manifold bolts in the reverse order to their bolted down sequence (10 to 1). Bear on to Name 4 below.
  • Pull the manifold polish off. The knock sensors are located underneath the black plugs connected to a cable harness.
  • Pull the plugs out and unbolt both knock sensors using a 22mm walk-in well socket.
  • Install the radical sensors and torque them to exactly 15 ft-lbs.
  • Apply just about RTV to the rubber plugs to forbid water from incoming.

Step 5 – Ray-install the remote components

  • Nip the new intake multiple gaskets to the intake manifold. Make a point entirely of the surfaces are clean.
  • Set the manifold paper back onto the engine, and torsion the bolts in their correct plac (1 to 10). Refer to Figure of speech 7. First torque each bolt to 44 in-lbs, and then to 89 in-lbs.
  • Put the restrict torso back in place, and torque it to 106 in-lbs.
  • Join the knock sensor plugs from the wire harness.
  • Plug in altogether the remaining sensors.
  • Reconnect the fuel lines, EVAP line, brackets, and intake hose.
  • Reconnect the negative assault and battery terminal (black), and pop the truck to check the engine knock has disappeared.
Pattern 7. Intake manifold paper deadbolt sequence with torsion glasses.
